Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

Mr. Jallali is a renowned plastic surgeon based in Central London, recognised internationally for his excellence in tummy tuck procedures.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery designed to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen while tightening the abdominal muscles, resulting in a smoother, firmer abdominal profile.

Pregnancy, weight loss, and natural ageing can lead to weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles in the midline, which cannot be corrected through exercise and diet alone.

When there is only a small amount of loose skin, usually prior to pregnancy, a mini tummy tuck may be sufficient.

It’s important to note that it’s not a weight-loss procedure, so it’s advisable to reach your target weight before undergoing abdominoplasty in London. For many women, opting for a tummy tuck is about regaining shape and boosting confidence.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is carried out in one of my London clinics under general anaesthetic and typically lasts 2- 3 hours.

You will require an overnight stay in hospital to reduce the chance of a deep vein thrombosis.

If you have liposuction carried out at the time of the tummy tuck, you will require a drain. This is usually removed 3 – 5 days after your surgery.

Tummy tuck options

There are a number of techniques and I will advise you on the best one for you during your consultation in London.

  • Mini Tummy Tuck – A mini tummy tuck might be suitable if you have not experienced significant abdominal changes from pregnancy. This procedure targets the skin and muscles below the belly button. It is not recommended for women whose abdomen has changed due to pregnancy or childbirth.
  • Full tummy tuck – A full tummy tuck is ideal if you have excess skin and a changed body shape following pregnancy or weight loss. Also known as a traditional or standard tummy tuck, this procedure removes excess skin and fat, and repairs torn muscles, resulting in a flatter and firmer abdomen.
  • Extended tummy tuck – An extended tummy tuck differs from a full tummy tuck by the additional incisions made around the hips and back. This technique removes excess skin and fat from the waist and back, helping to create a more defined waistline and back.
  • Fleur de Lis tummy tuck – The fleur de lis tummy tuck aims to remove significant amounts of excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. I make a horizontal incision from hip to hip and a vertical incision from the rib cage to the pubic bone. This technique is ideal for patients with substantial excess skin and fat, allowing for the removal of larger quantities.
  • Brazilian tummy tuck – This technique combines a tummy tuck with liposuction to achieve a sculpted appearance. In a Brazilian tummy tuck, I use liposuction to remove fat from the waist, abdomen, and flanks for a more contoured look.

FAQs

To find out more about abdominoplasties in London, please contact my dedicated team.

Making the decision to undergo plastic surgery is a significant step, and selecting the appropriate plastic surgeon is crucial for achieving your desired outcomes and ensuring a safe and fulfilling journey. Given the multitude of professionals available, it is vital to thoroughly assess potential surgeons.

Here are my top ten factors to consider when choosing a plastic surgeon:

  1. Plastic surgery qualifications
  2. GMC specialist register for plastic surgery
  3. Expertise and specialisation
  4. Patient reviews and testimonials
  5. Clear communication
  6. Patient rapport
  7. Results – photographs of previous work
  8. Aftercare support
  9. Accredited facilities
  10. Trust

During your consultation, I will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Discuss your aims and expectations
  • Conduct an examination and measurement of your abdomen
  • Assess whether a tummy tuck procedure is a suitable operation for you
  • Explain different tummy tuck techniques and recommend the best procedure for you
  • Answer your questions, including those about aftercare and recovery
  • Show you before and after photos of my work
  • Explain the benefits of my pioneering wound closure technique
  • Provide a clinic letter detailing our discussion and the surgical plan.

Most patients seeking a tummy tuck are post-pregnancy, where the skin has not retracted, and the rectus muscles have separated, also known as divarication of the recti muscles. This results in a bulge that cannot be corrected with exercise.

Additionally, patients who have undergone significant weight loss also benefit from this procedure.

A mini abdominoplasty is ideal for patients who have not been pregnant and do not need the belly button relocated.

There is no upper age limit for a tummy tuck as long as you are deemed fit for general anaesthetic.

I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.

Recovery after a tummy tuck usually takes around 14 days. I give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide you can expect:

  • In most cases I recommend at least two weeks off work and six weeks avoiding heavy exercise or tasks.
  • You will need to wear a compression garment immediately after your surgery and this is usually worn for a minimum of 4 weeks post op.
  • All the stitches are dissolvable.
  • Regular clinic visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress, and you will remain under close observation for the first twelve months following surgery, after which you are expected to be discharged.

I have developed a sophisticated wound closure technique which means patients can shower on the first postoperative day

Complications are rare in my hands but include infection, bleeding, scar, change in sensation and seroma (fluid collection). Whilst patients are warned about these most do not develop any and the post operative recovery is generally uneventful.

The cost of a tummy tuck largely depends on the technique and the individual patient.

I offer a very transparent package quote, which sets out all of the fees, including your post surgery follow up appointments with me.

The package prices start from:

  • £6,000 – mini tummy tuck
  • £10,000 – full abdominoplasty
  • £12,000 – full abdominoplasty with liposuction
  • £15,000 – full abdominoplasty with 360 liposuction
