What is breast reduction?

A breast mammoplasty, commonly known as breast reduction, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of large, heavy breasts. This procedure reduces the size, lifts and repositions the breasts to enhance comfort and body proportions, revitalizing your appearance and self-confidence.

Performed under general anaesthetic in London, I remove excess breast tissue and skin to sculpt breasts that are better proportioned and more aesthetically pleasing. The result is smaller, lighter, firmer, and more symmetrical breasts, creating a more youthful appearance. Information about the mammoplasty procedure

A breast reduction procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and typically lasts between 2 to 3 hours. It is commonly performed as a day case at our London clinic, enabling you to go home on the same day provided you have someone to care for you for the initial 24 hours.

I do not use drains when performing a breast reduction, allowing you to mobilise much quicker and ensuring a smoother recovery. The stitches are dissolvable, so there’s no need for removal after surgery.

BREAST REDUCTION OPTIONS

There are several options for breast reduction surgery in London, which vary depending on factors such as nipple position, amount of breast tissue, skin quality, and patient expectations. These techniques are designed to create breasts with a natural look and feel, ultimately changing your life.

Anchor, inverted-T, or Wise-pattern breast reduction: This is the most common type, known for its versatility and the lift it provides. It’s popular with surgeons and patients alike due to its effectiveness.

Vertical or lollipop breast reduction: Ideal for women with medium-to-large-sized breasts, this technique offers a pleasing perky breast shape and projection, with fewer scars. However, it may not be suitable for extremely large breasts.

Horizontal or modified Robertson breast reduction: While suitable for some clients, this technique may pose challenges for reshaping the breast and providing projection.

Free nipple graft: Reserved for very droopy breasts or clients desiring very small breasts.

Liposuction: Fat is removed from the breast through liposuction, either alongside other types of breast reduction or as an alternative. However, it’s rarely recommended due to limited benefits and results.

Who will benefit from breast reduction surgery?

Determining who will benefit from a breast reduction is subjective, but if you find that your breast size interferes with your daily activities, such as clothing choices, ability to exercise, or causes psychological distress, then you are likely to benefit from the procedure.

There is no specific upper limit regarding breast size, and many patients express regret that they did not undergo breast reduction surgery sooner.

I typically advise waiting until the age of 18 before having a breast reduction, unless you have juvenile breast hyperplasia. However, there is no upper age limit as long as you are deemed medically fit for a general anaesthetic.

What type of recovery can I expect after a breast reduction?

I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.

Recovery after a breast reduction largely depends on type of breast reduction you are having and can be as little as a few days.

I give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide you can expect:

In most cases I recommend at least one week off work and two weeks avoiding heavy exercise or tasks.
I do not use drains when performing breast reductions, so you will be able to mobilise much quicker and won’t have any of the discomfort and inconvenience associated with drains.
You will need to wear a post-op recovery bra for six weeks after a breast reduction.
Dressings are removed after two weeks.
Regular clinic visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress, and you will remain under close observation for the first twelve months following surgery, after which you are expected to be discharged.

Will I be able to shower after my breast reduction surgery?

I have developed a wound closure technique that allows you to shower immediately after your breast reduction.

What is the cost of breast reduction surgery?

The cost of a breast reduction procedure largely depends on the technique and the individual patient.

I offer a very transparent package quote, which sets out all of the fees, including your post surgery follow up appointments with me.

The package prices start from £10,995.
It is recommended that the removed breast tissue is examined by a histopathologist to exclude any serious pathology, and this will cost an additional £750-£1,500.

Where are the scars and how big are they?

The scars are normally in a shape of an anchor. They tend to fade to a white faint line within 12 months. I have a library of before and after photographs that show the progression of the scars. In general the scars are not noticeable after 12 months.

What are the complications associated with breast reduction?

Most patients are worried that the operation is painful but it in fact it is very well tolerated by the majority of patients. Complications are rare in my hands but include infection, bleeding, scar, change in sensation and loss of the nipple. The most common problem is slow healing at the T-junction and this may require dressings for up to 8 weeks post op. Whilst patients are warned about these most do not develop any issues and the post operative recovery is generally uneventful.
