The eyes are often the first area of the face to show signs of aging, making eyelid and eye bag surgery a transformative option for achieving a firmer and fresher appearance

What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid or eye bag surgery, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It aims to improve the appearance of the eyes by addressing issues such as drooping eyelids, puffiness, and bags under the eyes, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.

As you age, the muscles around your eyes weaken, and the eyelid skin begins to sag, leading to the accumulation of excess fat below your eyelids. This results in droopy upper lids and bags under the eyes. Upper eyelid surgery reduces, reshapes, and lifts the eyelid skin, while lower blepharoplasty removes unwanted eye bags, leaving you with fresher, more youthful, and alert-looking eyes.

In addition to cosmetic benefits, severely sagging skin around the eyes can impair peripheral vision, particularly in the upper and outer fields. Blepharoplasty can eliminate this obstruction, reducing or eliminating vision problems and restoring a clearer field of sight.

What is the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids.

  • Upper blepharoplasty: focuses on correcting the eyelids
  • Lower blepharoplasty: targets the removal of eye bags.

Some patients may find that both upper and lower blepharoplasty procedures are necessary to address their concerns effectively.

What does a blepharoplasty involve?

There are a number of blepharoplasty techniques depending on whether you are seeking upper eyelid rejuvenation, eye bag removal, or both. I will advise you on the best one for you during your consultation.

Blepharoplasty takes 1-3 hours depending on the type of blepharoplasty being performed.

  • Upper blepharoplasty: Performed as a day case under local or general anaesthetic, I make an incision along just above the lash line, removing any excess skin, fat, or muscle. The incision is then closed, and the scar is concealed within the natural fold of your eye. Sutures are removed 5 days after the procedure.
  • Lower blepharoplasty: Performed under general anaesthetic, an incision is typically made below your eyelashes. This approach enables me to remove skin, muscle and fat, as necessary. You will require an overnight stay in hospital. Some patients may also require a canthopexy, which is an additional procedure performed with a lower blepharoplasty, to support the lower eyelid to reduce the chance of complications post surgery.

  4. Results – photographs of previous work
  5. Patient reviews and testimonials
  6. Clear communication
  7. Patient rapport

  10. Trust

During your consultation, I will:

  • Discuss your aims and expectations
  • Conduct an examination and measurement of your eyes
  • Assess whether a blepharoplasty is suitable for you
  • Explain different blepharoplasty techniques and recommend the best procedure for you

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty typically do not have underlying eye conditions or general medical illnesses like thyroid disease that could affect the eyelids. While there is no specific age requirement for the procedure, eyelid aesthetics often deteriorate with age, and I do not recommend a blepharoplasty for patients under the age of 40.

The decision to undergo surgery is a very personal one based on what feels right for you.

I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.

Recovery after a blepharoplasty usually takes around one week. If you have had an upper blepharoplasty the swelling can take up to six weeks to settle. I give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide:

  • You will need to sleep on your back with your head elevated for two weeks.
  • When blepharoplasty has also been performed the stitches are usually removed after 5 days and you will be reviewed again at 2 weeks post op.
  • Regular clinic visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress, and you will remain under close observation for the first twelve months following surgery, after which you are expected to be discharged.

The scars are hidden in the crease of the eyelid for an upper blepharoplasty procedure and in the lower lash line for a lower blepharoplasty/eye bag removal procedure. Once healed the scars will be extremely difficult to detect.

Complications in general are rare apart from bruising. Most patients find with an upper blepharoplasty, it is difficult to close the eyes for the first few days. You may also experience dry or watery eyes for up to 3 months following surgery. Very occasionally patients can develop drooping of the lower eyelid (ectropion). There is also a very small chance of loss of vision with this surgery.

The cost of your blepharoplasty largely depends on the combination and complexity of the procedures being performed. Prices are from:

  • £3,995 – upper blepharoplasty under local anaesthetic
  • £5,995 – lower blepharoplasty under general anaesthetic
  • £8,995 – upper & lower blepharoplasty under general anaesthetic

I offer a very transparent package quote, which sets out all of the fees, including your post surgery follow up appointments with me.
