Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or boob job, involves placing an implant beneath the breast tissue, either above or below the muscle to increase the size of your breasts. I employ either the subglandular or dual-plane techniques to achieve the most natural appearance for my patients.
Throughout preoperative consultations at my London clinic, I evaluate your desired outcome and align it with your unique body characteristics.
I usually recommend silicone-filled breast implants. Silicone breast implants are considered a better choice as they feel more like natural breast tissue and have a very high patient satisfaction rate.
In certain cases, a select group of patients may benefit from using their own fat to augment the size of their breasts, this is known as fat transfer. However, it’s important to note that this technique typically results in a maximum increase of one cup size.
Breast implants come in different volumes and shapes; anatomical (tear drop) and round and all are available with a choice of different profiles. The largest volume available is 800cc, however the majority of women only need an implant volume between 200cc and 500cc to achieve their desired look.
I prefer to use round implants which tend to feel softer and are less likely to rotate. Anatomical implants may be recommended for patients who are very tall and thin. Although individual anatomy will impact the final cup size in relation to the volume of the implant, please consider below as a guide:
A breast augmentation procedure is conducted in a London-based clinic under general anaesthetic and typically lasts between 1 to 1.5 hours. The stitches used are dissolvable, eliminating the need for removal post-surgery.
It is typically performed as a day case, allowing you to return home on the same day provided you have someone to care for you for the initial 24 hours.
There is no need for a drain, and you will usually be discharged approximately 4-5 hours post-surgery.

Making the decision to have plastic surgery is a significant step, and selecting the appropriate plastic surgeon is key for achieving your desired outcomes and ensuring a safe and trusted journey.
Here are my top ten considerations when choosing a plastic surgeon:
There are a number of factors to consider when thinking about a breast augmentation but the most common question is about the position or ‘plane’ of the implant.
Breast implants can be placed either in front or behind the muscle. Subglandular placement is when the breast implant is placed in front of the pectoralis major muscle.
A dual plane /submuscular placement is where the implant is positioned under the pectoralis major muscle. This may be recommended if you lack sufficient soft tissue to cover the breast implants or if you want to avoid an augmented look. The muscle provides an extra layer of coverage to conceal the implant edge.
I will discuss these options with you during your consultation and recommend the most appropriate technique to achieve your desired goals.
I will discuss the suitability of tear drop (anatomical) and round implants during your initial consultation.
Most patients are better served with round implants. This type of implant is less likely to rotate and is also softer to touch.
I will explain the difference between smooth and textured implants during your consultation and consider the most suitable for you.
Textured implants have been associated with breast implant related anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BI- ALCL)* and smooth implants have a greater risk of capsular contracture and risk of displacement.
I will discuss your most suitable type of implant during your consultation.
*BI-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma i.e. cancer of the immune system and the association between breast implants and BI-ALCL was first recognised in 2011.
BI-ALCL is not a breast cancer and breast implants are not associated with this form of tumour. In most cases, BI-ALCL is localised around the implant but in some rarer cases, it may spread throughout the body. The risk of BI-ALCL is low, with an estimated prevalence of around 1:6000 –1:30000. Textured implants appear to have a greater risk of BI-ALCL, but the cause of this is not clear. It appears that the fill of breast implant i.e. silicone vs saline does not affect the risk of developing BI-ALCL.
I normally places the scan underneath the breast (inframammary fold) and can get most breast implants placed in the pocket through a 3.5-4.5 cm incision.
Scars post breast enlargement generally tend to fade very well and are not noticeable after 12 months.
The other options are the transaxillary (underarm) incision or peri-areolar incision; around the bottom half of the areola. Both of these options restrict the access and have a higher associated risks and complications.
I have developed a wound closure technique that allows you to shower immediately post op.
I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.
Your full recovery time largely depends on the technique used and can be as little as a few days. There is often very little pain even with dual plane augmentations and any discomfort will be managed with mild painkillers post op.
The cost of a breast enlargement with me largely depends on the technique and the individual patient.
I offer a very transparent package quote, which sets out all of the fees, including your post surgery follow up appointments with me.
Most patients are worried that the operation is painful but it in fact it is very well tolerated by the majority of patients. Complications are extremely rare in my hands but include infection, bleeding, scar, change in sensation, capsular contracture and rippling. Whilst patients are warned about these most do not develop any and the post operative recovery is generally uneventful.
