What is a breast uplift?

A mastopexy, often called a breast uplift, is a surgical procedure to improve the contour of your breasts by lifting and reshaping them, giving you a more youthful, firmer, and fuller appearance.

A breast uplift typically takes around two hours to complete and is usually performed as a day case. However, if you live alone or far away, an overnight stay might be necessary. I conduct mastopexies under general anaesthetic, complemented by local anaesthetic infiltration to ensure your comfort post-surgery.

Breast uplifts are often be combined with other procedures, such as breast augmentations, breast reductions, and mummy makeovers.

What happens during breast uplift procedures?

I perform all of my breast uplifts under general anaesthetic and the operation usually lasts around 2 hours.

A mastopexy is normally carried out as a day case but you may need to stay in overnight if you live alone. I do not use any drains post-operatively and you will be able to shower straight away.

Breast uplift options

There are several techniques available for a mastopexy procedure, and I will advise you on the best one for you, following your clinical assessment and physical examination.

  • Periareolar/Benelli mastopexy – This will produce a small lift, however, the scars are only around the areola and once healed are barely visible.
  • Vertical/Lollipop uplift – This will give more of an uplift and allows for the removal of more skin. The scar looks like a lollipop and will fade
  • Anchor/ Wisepattern uplift  – This will give the greatest degree of lift and is recommended if the nipples are in a very low position and the breast has a significant degree of sagging. The inverted lift is performed in the same way as the vertical lift, with an additional scar made along the inner crease of the breasts. This allows me to better access to remove breast tissue and excess skin, for a greater lift and improved breast shape. The scar on the crease of the breast will be well hidden and this method is often recommended over a vertical lift.

Making the decision to undergo plastic surgery is a significant step, and selecting the appropriate plastic surgeon is crucial for achieving your desired outcomes and ensuring a safe and fulfilling journey. Given the multitude of professionals available, it is vital to thoroughly assess potential surgeons.

Here are my top ten factors to consider when choosing a plastic surgeon:

  1. Plastic surgery qualifications
  2. GMC specialist register for plastic surgery
  3. Expertise and specialisation
  4. Results – photographs of previous work
  5. Patient reviews and testimonials
  6. Clear communication
  7. Patient rapport
  8. Aftercare support
  9. Accredited facilities
  10. Trust

During your consultation, which will take place in a London clinic, I will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Discuss your aims and expectations
  • Conduct an examination and measurement of your breasts
  • Assess whether a breast uplift is a suitable operation for you
  • Explain different breast uplift techniques and recommend the best type of breast uplift for you
  • Answer your questions, including those about aftercare and recovery
  • Show you before and after photos of my work
  • Explain the benefits of my pioneering wound closure technique
  • Provide a clinic letter detailing our discussion and the surgical plan.

Determining who will benefit from a breast uplift is subjective, but if you find that your breasts are sagging, or have lost their elasticity (ptotic), then you are likely to benefit from having a mastopexy procedure.

Most patients seeking a mastopexy are either post pregnancy or have had significant weight loss. Unfortunately, no amount of exercise can restore breast shape once elasticity is lost and surgery becomes the only option to improve breast shape.

To achieve the desired result, breast lifts require placing a scar around the nipple to adequately lift it and create a pleasing breast shape. The scar extends down the front of the breast and underneath in the shape of an anchor (Wise pattern).

Breast lift scars tend to fade well, and most are not noticeable after around 12 months. Very occasionally, patients can get scarring problems, and in that scenario, you may require steroid injections in order to settle the scars.

I will keep you under close review during your first year after surgery to ensure that the scars are healing well and progressing without any issues.

I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.

Recovery after a breast uplift largely depends on type of mastopexy you are having. In general, most patients have an anchor shaped scar, and it usually requires around 2 weeks to fully recover.

I give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide you can expect:

  • In most cases I recommend at least one week off work and two weeks avoiding heavy exercise or tasks.
  • I do not use drains when performing breast uplifts, so you will be able to mobilise much quicker and won’t have any of the discomfort and inconvenience associated with drains.
  • You will need to wear a post-op recovery bra for six weeks after a breast uplift.
  • Dressings are removed after two weeks.
  • Regular clinic visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress, and you will remain under close observation for the first twelve months following surgery, after which you are expected to be discharged.

I have developed a wound closure technique that allows you to shower immediately after your breast uplift.

In my hands complications are very rare. The most common issue is slow healing at the T junction. This usually goes on to heal within 8 weeks with dressings alone. Other complications that you should be aware of include infection, bleeding and change in sensation to the nipple-areola complex as well as a very small risk of losing the nipple-areola complex. I will inform you of your individual risks during your consultations.
