Tuberous breast is a type of hypoplastic (underdeveloped) breast condition where the breast does not develop normally. This congenital disorder affects breast growth and development.
Tuberous breast becomes noticeable during puberty when the breast tissue and mammary glands fail to develop properly, resulting in an abnormal shape and size instead of a naturally rounded appearance.
In this condition, breast tissue predominantly forms around the nipple (areola) rather than the lower breast. This leads to an enlarged and puffy areola, and the breasts often take on a cone-like or tubular shape, sometimes with an increased gap between them.
Tuberous breast can affect one or both breasts and is classified for severity using von Heimburg’s formula, ranging from grade 1 (mild) to grade 4 (severe).
Enhancing the size and contour of your breasts can transform feelings of embarrassment into self-assurance and body contentment, leaving you feeling confident and fabulous.
Benefits of tuberous breast surgery may include:
Most patients require a form of tissue expansion either in the form of an implant or a tissue expander. Breast tissue will often need to be modified and therefore all operations are carried out under general anaesthetic and usually done as a day case in our London-based clinic.
I do not use drains post-operatively and the wounds are sutured and glued. This means that you can shower straight away.

Making the decision to undergo plastic surgery is a significant step, and selecting the appropriate plastic surgeon is crucial for achieving your desired outcomes and ensuring a safe and fulfilling journey. Given the multitude of professionals available, it is vital to thoroughly assess potential surgeons.
Here are my top ten factors to consider when choosing a plastic surgeon:
During your consultation, I will:
It is important that you choose a surgeon who is experienced in tuberous breast deformity. My patients have often sort the medical advice of a number of practitioners, who unfortunately misinform them that correction of tuberous breast deformity is not possible.
I am a specialist in breast reconstructive surgery with extensive experience in tuberous breast correction. I have experience in correcting even the most severe types of tuberous breast.
Results with progressive expansion using tissue expanders and periareolar lift surgery are excellent for reshaping the breasts. Even grade 4 tuberous breast deformities have been corrected with this method and I am an expert with this corrective procedure and has a very high patient satisfaction rate
Any woman who is unhappy with the way her breasts look regardless of the degree of tuberous breast deformity can benefit from corrective surgery.
I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.
Recovery after tuberous breast correction usually takes 7-10 days. I give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide you can expect:
When there is a need for tissue expansion, a follow up consultation is arranged 2 weeks after the operation and the tissue expansion is started by adding saline to the tissue expander through a small port accessed with a needle. The process may take up to 3 months to complete for a grade 4 tuberous breast deformity. The tissue expander can be sealed once you feel happy with your breast shape or exchanges for a silicone breast implant if desired. There is also a small chance that a secondary mastopexy/breast lift may be required.
I have developed a sophisticated wound closure technique which means patients can shower on the first postoperative day
Complications are extremely rare in my care, but they include infection, bleeding, scar, change in sensation, rippling and capsular contracture if implants are used.
The cost of a tuberous breast correction largely depends on the technique and the individual patient.
I offer a very transparent package quote, which sets out all of the fees, including your post surgery follow up appointments with me.
The package prices (which include all fees and follow ups) start from £7,500 with fixed volume breast implants. When tissue expanders are required, the cost will be higher and there will be additional costs if a breast uplift is also required.
We support you through every stage of your journey
