What is a facelift?

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at reducing the signs of aging by improving the contour of the face and neck. As people age, the skin loses its elasticity, and factors like gravity, sun exposure, and genetics contribute to sagging skin, deep creases, and a loss of youthful contours. A facelift addresses these issues by removing excess facial skin, tightening underlying tissues, and repositioning the skin to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Facelifts primarily concentrate on enhancing the lower two-thirds of the face and neck, particularly addressing areas such as the jawline and neck, where aging signs are most prominent. Although non-surgical options like botulinum toxin and dermal fillers can tackle certain aging indicators, a facelift offers a more comprehensive rejuvenation.

What happens during a facelift?

Facelift surgery typically lasts about three hours, though more complex cases may take longer. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, with local anaesthetic infiltration applied to ensure post-operative comfort.

After the surgery, light facial dressings are applied, followed by a thicker bandage to minimise swelling and bruising during the first 24 hours.

You will require an overnight stay in a London hospital and I will remove your thicker dressing before you are discharged.

What are the different types of facelift?

There are a number of facelift techniques and I will advise you on the best one for you during your consultation.

Deep-plane facelift: A longer lasting procedure, offered by very few plastic surgeons in the UK. In a deep-plane facelift, surgery targets the supportive layer of the face rather than solely addressing the skin, working both above and below the jawline. This approach allows for tissue lifting without excessive skin tension, resulting in a natural and rejuvenated appearance.

SMAS facelift: The SMAS facelift addresses aging concerns in both the lower and upper face as well as the neck. By removing excess fat and skin while tightening the underlying muscles, this surgery enhances the appearance of sagging skin around the cheeks and jawline, effectively eliminating double chin and jowls.

Short scar or MACS facelift: Offers a swift recovery period while providing enduring results. Additionally, it boasts the advantage of delivering an exceptionally natural-looking outcome.

Mini facelift: Ideal for clients experiencing early signs of aging, such as jowls, volume loss, and wrinkles due to the initial loss of skin elasticity. This procedure concentrates on rejuvenating the lower part of the face to restore a more youthful appearance.

Full facelift with neck lift: By combining a full facelift with a neck lift, your surgeon can comprehensively address signs of aging. This procedure not only tightens the facial skin but also enhances the appearance of the neck by removing excess fat and tightening the underlying muscles, resulting in a more youthful and rejuvenated overall look.

What type of recovery can I expect after a facelift?

I have a team of senior anaesthetists who manage your pain, allowing you to mobilise quickly.

Recovery after a facelift usually takes around 14 days. I give you personalised advice regarding your aftercare and recovery, but as a general guide:

I rarely use a drain post-operatively and the dressings are extremely light. The following day after the procedure the bandages are removed before you go home.
In most cases I recommend at least two weeks off work and six weeks avoiding heavy exercise or tasks.
You will need to sleep on your back with your head elevated.
When blepharoplasty has also been performed the stitches are usually removed after 5 days and you will be reviewed again at 2 weeks post op.
Your face can remain swollen for up to 6 weeks post-operatively.
Regular clinic visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress, and you will remain under close observation for the first twelve months following surgery, after which you are expected to be discharged.

When will I be able to shower?

I have developed a sophisticated wound closure technique which means patients can shower on the first postoperative day

Where are the scars located after a facelift?

During your consultation I will show you exactly where your scars will be positioned. With a full face lift, the scar is positioned either in front or at the ear and curves around the earlobe and continues around the back of the head.

I take great care to position the scars so that they will be very difficult to detect. I use various techniques and can also perform more complex face lifts including a deep plane face lift.

What are the risks and complications associated with a facelift?

Most patients are worried that the operation is painful but it in fact it is very well tolerated by the majority of patients. Complications are extremely rare under my care, but include infection, bleeding, scarring, nerve damage and poor wound healing. You will experience some numbness in the face for up to 6 months following surgery, but the procedure itself is well tolerated and not painful.

What is the cost of a facelift?

The cost of your facelift largely depends on the combination and complexity of the procedures being performed.

The package price starts from £12,500 but you may benefit from additional procedures, such as fat grafting, which will increase the cost of the surgery.
