Dermal Fillers are injectable treatments intended to replenish lost volume in the deeper layers of the face. They are used to restore volume in areas such as the midface, cheeks, and jawline, as well as to diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles in regions that may have experienced mild deflation over time.

How do dermal fillers work?

What to expect in your dermal filler treatment

Before your treatment

During your initial consultation, I will listen to your treatment expectations and discuss your desired outcomes. I will assess your needs and recommend the most suitable dermal filler treatment for you. Each case is unique, so you will receive a personalised treatment plan based on your concerns, facial anatomy, and medical history. Once a treatment plan is agreed upon and you are ready to proceed, you will be asked to read, understand, and sign a consent form before the treatment begins.

During your treatment

The procedure is quick and typically takes 15-30 minutes.

There are three steps in your dermal filler treatment in London:

Cleansing: I clean your skin with an anti-bacterial solution.
Anaesthesia: I use a topical local anaesthetic to reduce any discomfort.
The injection process: With a very fine needle I inject dermal filler under the skin, into the subcutaneous tissue. The key element of dermal filler treatment is to produce a natural result. This involves a number of factors including the type of dermal filler, the amount and the correct site of injection.

After your treatment

Post-treatment, you may experience mild reactions such as slight redness, swelling, itching, bruising, and tenderness. These reactions are generally mild to moderate and typically resolve within one or two days, although they may last longer for some treatments. Most patients can return to work or their usual daily activities immediately after the treatment.

It’s important to follow these guidelines after treatment to ensure optimal results:

Avoid strenuous exercise: Refrain from any strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment. This helps minimise the risk of swelling or discomfort.
Avoid bending down: Try not to bend down for the remainder of the day following treatment. This precaution helps prevent increased blood flow to the treated area, which could potentially affect the results.
Elevate your head: Use extra pillows while sleeping on the first night after treatment to keep your head elevated. This can reduce swelling and promote better recovery.

There are important considerations to keep in mind before undergoing dermal filler treatment. Here’s a breakdown of when dermal fillers may not be suitable:

Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: It’s generally advised to avoid dermal fillers during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to potential risks to the baby.
Sensitivity to Hyaluronic Acid: If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to hyaluronic acid, which is a common ingredient in many dermal fillers, then such treatments should be avoided.
Autoimmune Problems: Individuals with autoimmune conditions may have compromised immune systems, which could affect how the body responds to dermal fillers. It’s important to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
Active Oral Herpes Infection: If you have an active outbreak of oral herpes (cold sores), dermal filler treatment should be postponed until the infection has completely healed. Injection procedures could potentially trigger or exacerbate the condition.

When administered by an expert practitioner, dermal filler treatment should give you a very natural result. The aim should be to enhance your appearance without looking unnatural.

What should I avoid before and after dermal filler treatment?

Before your treatment

The main concern regarding dermal filler is risk of bruising. Patients should therefore avoid any form of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Voltarol) for 10 days prior to treatment. If you are on a blood thinning medication e.g. warfarin, please contact us prior to having your dermal filler injected.

After your treatment

I recommend that you do not do any form of strenuous exercise for 24 hours after. I also suggest that you do not bend down for the rest of the day following treatment. It is also advisable to use extra pillows at night in order to keep your head elevated the first night after treatment.

When will I see the results of my dermal filler treatment?

You will see results immediately and the full effect after 24 hours.

What are the potential complications of dermal filler treatment?

Complications with dermal fillers are uncommon and allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid fillers are very rarely encountered. The most common complication is bruising, and this usually settles within a few days. There is a very small chance of infection and lumpiness, but I have not encountered this in his practice. Injections around the eye carry the risk of loss of vision and very rarely there can be skin damage (skin necrosis) and pigmentation.
