Whether you’re considering rhinoplasty for aesthetic or medical reasons, it’s natural to have many questions about the recovery process and results. In our previous blog posts, I spoke about the differences between surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty and the benefits of this procedure. In this blog post, I will answer some of the most common questions to help you prepare for your rhinoplasty journey.
1. Is rhinoplasty permanent?
Once the nose has been reshaped, the changes made to the bone, cartilage and tissue are long-lasting. However, like any other part of the body, the nose will still undergo natural ageing processes over time. Factors such as skin elasticity, genetics and environmental exposure (such as sun damage) can impact the long-term appearance of your nose. That said, most patients enjoy the benefits of rhinoplasty for many years with improvements that enhance their overall appearance and self-confidence.
2. Can I blow my nose after rhinoplasty surgery?
Blowing your nose after rhinoplasty is strongly discouraged during the initial recovery phase as it can lead to complications such as bleeding, swelling or, in some cases, it may affect the results. For the first two weeks following surgery, the nasal tissues are highly sensitive and fragile, and blowing your nose can disrupt the healing process. Nasal congestion is normal after a rhinoplasty procedure so consult your surgeon for safe alternatives like saline nasal sprays or gentle dabbing.
3. Can I sleep on my side after rhinoplasty surgery?
In the weeks following rhinoplasty, you’ll need to avoid sleeping on your side. Sleeping on your back with your head elevated is recommended for the first four to six weeks to reduce swelling and minimise the risk of putting pressure on the nose. Elevating your head while sleeping also improves circulation and helps reduce post-surgical swelling. Once your surgeon confirms that your nose has healed sufficiently, you can return to your usual sleeping positions.

4. When can I exercise after rhinoplasty surgery?
While light walking is encouraged soon after surgery to promote circulation, you should avoid strenuous activities for six weeks. This includes cardio, weight lifting and contact sports. These activities can increase your heart rate and blood pressure which may lead to bleeding, swelling or even complications with the surgical results.
5. What aftercare can I do at home to improve my recovery post-surgery?
Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth and successful recovery from rhinoplasty. I recommend taking the following steps at home to promote healing and optimise your results:
- Rest and relaxation: Give your body time to heal by taking it easy during the first few weeks. Avoid any physical or emotional stress that could interfere with the recovery process.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions: Adhere to the guidelines your surgeon provides including taking medications, avoiding certain activities and attending follow-up appointments.
- Keep your head elevated: Whether sleeping or resting, keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and promote better circulation.
- Stay hydrated and eat nutritious foods: Proper nutrition is vital for wound healing. Focus on drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol: Both smoking and alcohol consumption can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.
